Savoring Summertime

Savoring Summertime

There’s something about summer that invites us to slow down, breathe deeper, and let go of the packed schedules and to-do lists that often define the rest of the year. For me and my family, summer is a season of ease and flexibility—an opportunity to enjoy the moment rather than rush through it.

I love the feeling of summer because it naturally relieves the stress of everyday life. An unexpected trip to the pool on my lunch break with our daughters or sitting outside in the evening, just watching the clouds roll by—these little moments add up to something meaningful. They remind me that slowing down doesn’t mean doing less; it means making room for what matters.

We’re living in a world that can feel heavy at times. But I’ve always tried to be a glass-half-full kind of person. Instead of letting the weight of the world get me down, I’ve learned to seek out the things that lift me, whether that’s listening to something inspiring, making something with my hands, or spending quality time with others.

One of my favorite forms of self-care lately is listening to podcasts that leave me feeling inspired or entertained. Here are a few that have filled my cup:

Soul Boom with Rainn Wilson – Yes, that Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute from The Office). This podcast goes deep in thoughtful and often humorous ways. A recent episode with Kelly Corrigan was so good, it led me to her show...

Kelly Corrigan Wonders – Kelly brings such a grounded, wise energy to her conversations. I’ve added her to my regular listening rotation.

One By Willie – In each episode, a buddy of mine who used to be an editor at Texas Monthly interviews someone about their favorite Willie Nelson song. A few favorites include episodes with Bonnie Raitt and Brené Brown. Highly recommend!

It’s a Good Life with Brian Buffini – His Irish accent alone is worth tuning in for, but his reflections and interviews often leave me thinking long after the episode ends.

Summer also brings out the creative spark in me. I’m carving out time to make jewelry or get out my sketchbook and draw. Recently, I heard a comment that stuck with me: “Too many people are watching others create online instead of creating themselves.” That hit home. So, I’m challenging myself to put my phone down more often and get back to making. I even want to relearn how to crochet—a skill my hometown librarian taught me as a kid. Maybe it’s time to make some new potholders!

Of course, not everything has to be creative or introspective—sometimes summer is just about having fun. I love playing games like Rummikub with my friends and family, and I’m hoping to relearn backgammon this year. Maybe even cribbage, if only to give my math brain a little workout.

Puzzles are another favorite—something about working on a jigsaw puzzle with others is so peaceful and grounding. It’s simple, screen-free, and satisfying.

So, what is filling your cup this summer? Whether it’s a podcast that makes you think, a project that gets your hands busy, or a game night with loved ones, I hope you find ways to lean into the slowness and savor the joy. Sometimes, the smallest things—like clouds, creativity, or cribbage—can bring the biggest sense of peace.

Here’s to a summer full of inspiration, intention, and just enough unscheduled time to discover what makes your heart light up.
