Holiday Crafts & New Year Intentions

Holiday Crafts & New Year Intentions

As December rolls in, many of us find ourselves digging out bins of ribbon, glue sticks, and craft paper — setting up little workshop corners on dining tables and kitchen islands. Something about the season invites us to make — with our hands, with intention — and perhaps this is exactly where our New Year resolutions can begin, too.

The Gift of Handmade

From paper snowflakes to stamped gift tags, gingerbread houses, or a pinecone wreath, handmade crafts carry a unique kind of spirit — not perfect, but personal. They slow us down. They pull us into the moment. They often involve the whole family. And sometimes… they remind us that the best things don’t come from stores.

Our family has crafted together since our kids were small, and our Christmas decorations tell the story. Every ornament holds a memory — tiny handprints, crooked stars, the kind of glitter that never quite vacuums up. Each piece is a time capsule of childhood, when the wonder of Christmas sparkled just as brightly as the tinsel on the tree.

Even now, as adults, our family still makes time to sit down and create together. While we work, we think of the friends and family who we’ll share our handmade gifts with. It’s creativity mixed with connection — a true win-win of holiday cheer.

What if our New Year’s resolutions started with the same spirit as our Christmas crafts?

  • Less pressure, more presence
  • More creativity, less perfection
  • Using what we already have
  • Hands busy — hearts open

Holiday Craft Ideas with a Resolution Twist:

Create Handmade Gratitude Ornaments — write one thing you’re grateful for on each ornament. Think about what went right this year? Consider a resolution to start a short weekly gratitude journal.

Vision Board Collage — mix magazine cutouts, words, textures. Consider what do I want more of in my life, such as “More nature walks,” “More dinners with friends,” etc.

Family Goal Garland — each ribbon or card lists a small goal. Think about who can I cheer on this year? Commit to one supportive habit for the New Year: check-ins, hugs, celebrations.

Scrap Paper Calendar — create a page for each month. Then ask yourself, what rhythms bring me peace? Create a routine: Sunday walks, phone in a drawer after 8pm, Sunday family dinner.

Resolutions, Reimagined

What if “resolutions” didn’t mean fixing ourselves — but growing thoughtfully?

Maybe this year isn’t about getting skinnier or busier — but about becoming a better neighbor, listener, friend. Perhaps it’s as simple as looking up more often, taking walks when the air is crisp, showing up when someone needs backup, sharing a recipe with the family next door, or finally planting those herbs.

Crafting Our Way Into the New Year

As you tape, tie, fold, and glitter… pay attention to what makes you feel lighter. The things that make time disappear. The things that make you exhale. Those might be the clues of what your New Year wants more of.

Because maybe resolutions don’t start on January 1st. Maybe they start right now — with glue on your fingers and a heart leaning forward.

Wishing you a season full of color, creativity, and gentle intention.
