The weekend, or even afternoons, call for getting outside and exploring during this time of year.  The bluebonnets and wildflowers are showing their majestic splendor and the days are getting a little longer to savor the time outside.  Here is a list of great things to do within an hour of Austin, whether you’re looking for relaxation, outdoor activities, or fun day trips.

1. Hamilton Pool Preserve
A visit to Hamilton Pool Preserve is a must for nature lovers. Located just a short drive from Travis Country, Hamilton Pool is a natural limestone grotto with a stunning 50-foot waterfall that cascades into a pool below. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, hiking, and taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the area. The preserve also offers hiking trails that wind through the rugged terrain. 2. Blanton Museum of Art 
For a dose of culture, visit the Blanton Museum of Art in downtown Austin. It’s one of the most impressive art collections in Texas, with a diverse array of modern and contemporary art, European paintings, and decorative arts. The museum also has rotating exhibitions, so there’s always something new to explore. Admission is free every Tuesday. blantonmuseum.org

3. Texas Hill Country Wineries 
The Hill Country is home to some of Texas’ best wineries, many of which are just a short drive from Austin. Fredericksburg is a charming town known for its wineries and shopping, German heritage, and beautiful countryside. Popular spots include Becker Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards, and William Chris Vineyards. Spend the day wine tasting, touring vineyards, and enjoying the picturesque Hill Country views. Many of the wineries also host live music and special events.

4. Pedernales Falls State Park 
Pedernales Falls State Park is a fantastic destination for hiking, swimming, and enjoying nature. The park is famous for its beautiful waterfalls, especially after rain when the Pedernales River flows powerfully through the rock formations. 5. Longhorn Cavern State Park 
For a unique underground adventure, head to Longhorn Cavern State Park near Burnet. The caverns offer guided tours where you can explore beautiful limestone formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. The park also has a rich history, with traces of Native American use and early settlers’ exploration. Entry to the park grounds is free; entry to the cavern is by paid guided tours.
